Global next week: Federal Reserve releases minutes of meeting, Ali leads China Stock Exchange to release earnings

U.S. President Trump signed a presidential memorandum on Thursday proposing reciprocal tariffs, but did not immediately implement them, which helped boost market sentiment.

On the other hand, although the two inflation data released this week-CPI and PPI-were both higher than market expectations, the increase in PCE-related categories in the U.S. January PPI data was relatively moderate. The PCE price index is the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation indicator.

Federal Reserve Chairman Powell said at a congressional hearing this week that given the strong performance of the U.S. economy, the Fed is in no hurry to cut interest rates further. The market currently expects the Fed to remain on the sidelines for a longer period of time and may not cut interest rates again until the fourth quarter.

The Federal Reserve will release the minutes of its January interest rate meeting in the early morning of next Thursday, Beijing time, where investors will look for clues about future monetary policy trends.

The Reserve Bank of Australia, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, the Central Bank of the Philippines and the Central Bank of Turkey will all announce the latest interest rate decisions next week.

In terms of earnings, retail giant Wal-Mart will announce its earnings results before Thursday’s session, which will provide investors with new insights into the health of U.S. consumers.

Wall Street closely follows trends in consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.

Matt Maley, chief market strategist at Miller Tabak, said Wal-Mart, one of the most important consumer companies in the United States, will be closely watched.

“It’s not just their earnings data and outlook guidance, it’s more about how they view consumers,” Maley said.

A number of stock companies will release fourth-quarter financial results next week. The most noteworthy one may be Alibaba, which will announce results before next Thursday’s market.

Alibaba’s U.S. stocks surged more than 20% this week, mainly because Apple chose it as its main partner in developing “Apple Intelligence” in China. At the same time, Ali’s increase so far this year is close to 50%.
