Vance: Europe’s biggest threat is not Russia, but from within

① U.S. Vice President Vance said that Europe’s biggest threat comes from within and worried that it will abandon its core values;
② Vance emphasized that Europe needs to strengthen its own defenses and said that the U.S. government believes that a peace agreement in Ukraine can be reached. At the same time, he pointed out the urgency of mass immigration and supported politicians who ended uncontrolled immigration policies.

Financial Union, February 15 (Editor Niu Zhanlin)U.S. Vice President Vance said on Friday that the main threat facing Europe is not Russia or other foreign powers, but from within, and he expressed concern that the continent would abandon its core values.

Vance said at the Munich Security Conference that day: “While the United States focuses on how to resolve the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Europe has bigger problems. The biggest threat facing Europe is also the threat I am worried about. It is not Russia or any other external factor. The threat lies within Europe.”

Vance mentioned that a former senior EU official had publicly praised the ruling of the Romania Constitutional Court on a television program, which announced the cancellation of the first round of voting in the presidential election originally scheduled for December 2024, citing so-called foreign interference. Vance suggested there was political motivation behind the ruling, simply because events did not proceed according to the EU member state’s plan.

The vice president also said the U.S. government believes a peace agreement in Ukraine can be reached. He emphasized that in the next few years, it is important for Europe to vigorously strengthen its own defense.

It is worth noting that during the meeting, European Commission President Von der Leyen responded that the EU needed to significantly increase defense spending. She will propose activating exemption clauses for defense investment, which will allow EU member states to significantly increase defense spending in a controlled and conditional manner.

Vance also pointed out: “Of all the urgent challenges facing representatives, I don’t think there is anything more urgent than mass immigration.” He said more and more European voters were voting for politicians who promised to end uncontrolled immigration policies, and Washington supported that position.

He claimed: “No one voted in the election to open the floodgates and put in millions of unprepared immigrants. In England, voters support Brexit. Whether you agree or not, they have made a choice. More and more people in Europe are voting for political leaders who promise to end uncontrolled immigration.”

He added that he himself had concerns in this regard, but ultimately believed that the concerns of European citizens were more important.

The day before, Vance also claimed that mainstream political parties in the EU were “a little afraid of different voices.” He criticized attempts to exclude different views, saying it was partly the result of “misinformation.”

European leaders ‘response

Regarding Vance’s latest speech, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas commented that Vance was trying to stir up disputes within the EU, and the EU should focus on greater threats, such as Russia’s war against Ukraine.

Ukraine lawmaker Oleksiy Goncharenko called Vance’s speech a “complete humiliation to all European leaders.” quot; I think this was one of the landmark speeches at the Munich Conference. Vance didn’t say anything about the war or Ukraine, which was a bad signal for us… We are in a very difficult situation and no one can help us except ourselves. quot; He added that Vance announced that the West no longer existed, leaving only the United States and its vassal European Union.

German Defense Minister Pistorius also called Vance’s abuse of European leaders “unacceptable.” He said that if he had not misinterpreted it, Vance had created the impression that minorities were suppressed or silenced in European democracy.
