Cailian News, February 16 (Editor Xia Junxiong)On Saturday (February 15) local time, Ukraine President Zelensky said that Ukraine will never accept a peace agreement reached without the country’s participation or behind it.
Zelensky spoke at a Munich security conference on Saturday in response to the upcoming negotiations between the United States and Russia on the Russia-Ukraine war.
U.S. President Trump spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin this week, and the two sides agreed to negotiate to end the Russia-Ukraine war. Trump said Ukraine will participate in all peace talks with Russia. The Russian side said that Ukraine will definitely participate in peace negotiations in some way, but there will be a separate bilateral negotiation mechanism between the United States and Russia.
Trump’s current stance is quite unfavorable to Ukraine. He has previously said that Ukraine’s joining NATO is “unrealistic” and it is unlikely to regain all its land.
As the Russia-Ukraine War approaches its fourth year, Russia currently controls about one-fifth of Ukraine’s land, including the Crimean Peninsula it annexed in 2014.
Ukraine has also occupied limited Russian territory. In August last year, it raided Kursk Oblast on Russia’s southern border, once occupying more than 1200 square kilometers of land, but Russia has recovered some of its lost territory.
“Ukraine will never accept an agreement reached behind our backs without our participation. The same principles should also apply across Europe,”Zelensky said on Saturday.
Zelensky also called on Europe to establish its own armed forces, urged European leaders to decide their own future, and said that Ukraine’s troops alone were not enough to ensure European security.
Zelensky predicted that the Kremlin would try to persuade Trump to attend the May 9 commemoration in Moscow. Russia will hold its annual Red Square military parade to commemorate the Soviet Union’s victory in World War II.
Zelensky said it would be “dangerous” for Trump to meet with Putin before meeting with him.
Trump met with Zelensky twice last year, but has not met him since he officially took office as US president.
