Assistant to former Georgian Prime Minister fled abroad on suspicion of embezzling former Prime Minister’s Bitcoin

Venture capitalist George Bachiashvili is on trial for allegedly embezzling investment earnings from former Georgian Prime Minister Bidzina Ivanishvili. Bachashvili embezzled 8,253.13 bitcoins between 2015 and 2017. He used Ivanishvili’s personal funds as collateral to obtain a $5 million loan from Cartu Bank and invested the loan in Bitcoin mining through Bitfury. Ivanishvili’s wealth is estimated to be as high as US$7.6 billion, equivalent to a quarter of Georgia’s GDP.
