“Suspension if you don’t go back to office” Musk strikes hard at federal employees working remotely

① Elon Musk’s latest threat is that federal workers who refuse to return to office will be suspended;
② Last month, after Trump was sworn in, he issued an order requiring federal employees to return to work in the office five days a week.

Cailian News, February 25 (Editor Zhao Hao)Elon Musk’s latest threat is that U.S. federal workers who refuse to return to office will be suspended.

On Monday (February 24) local time, Republican U.S. Representative Ralph Norman uploaded a clip of his media interview on social media, with an attachment stating,”Currently, no federal government agency occupies more than half of the office space.”

Musk forwarded the post and replied: “Those who ignored President Trump’s executive order to resume work have now received more than a month of warnings. Starting this week, employees who have not yet returned to the office to perform on-site work will be placed on ‘administrative leave.'”

Musk’s so-called “administrative leave” is a suspension. The “executive order to resume work” he referred to Trump’s order to return to office five days a week after taking office on January 20.

At that time, Trump clearly pointed out in the memorandum: “Heads of all departments and agencies under the executive branch of the government should quickly take all necessary measures to end the remote working model and require employees to fully resume full-time on-site work.”

The media added that Trump has created some exceptions to the order, such as “disabled, limited by medical conditions, or endorsed by the head of the agency,” who do not have to return to the office, and military spouses doing civilian work can also be exempted.

In November last year, Trump established a new “Department of Government Efficiency” after winning the election, initially composed of Musk and Silicon Valley entrepreneur Vivek. Vivek Ramaswamy was in charge.

That month, Musk and Ramaswamy jointly issued a document stating that civil servants who do not want to enter the office are welcome to resign. They emphasized that “if federal civil servants don’t want to work in the office, then U.S. taxpayers should not pay for their privilege of staying at home during the epidemic.”

It is worth mentioning that Musk does the same with the companies he manages. In 2022, after the COVID-19 epidemic subsided, Musk ordered Tesla employees to return to the office to work full-time. Musk said that full-time work is the company’s requirement for employees, and face-to-face cooperation is crucial to the company’s success.

Media analysis pointed out that many unions have reached agreements on remote work, which may ultimately make it difficult to implement Trump’s order to require employees to come to the office.

Last weekend, Musk revealed that the Department of Government Efficiency has required federal employees to write reports on their duties, and that “failure to respond to the request in time will be regarded as automatic resignation.”
