The United Nations staged a reversal: the United States and Russia join hands to oppose the Ukraine proposal

① In Monday’s vote on Russia-Ukraine issues at the United Nations General Assembly, the United States stood on the opposite side of Ukraine and European countries;
② The United States accused European countries of “pursuing a war of words rather than ending the war”;
③ The United States and Russia both voted against the resolution proposed by Ukraine.

Cailian News, February 25 (Editor Shi Zhengcheng)On Monday, local time, the United Nations General Assembly voted on two resolutions on the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The most dramatic ones were still U.S. representatives: they were busy confronting their former allies Ukraine and European countries.

On the third anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the resolution proposed by Ukraine follows the practice of past years, including a series of language condemning Russia and calling for a “just, lasting and comprehensive peace.” The proposal received 93 votes in favor, 18 votes against and 65 abstentions. The most eye-catching thing is thatBoth the United States and Russia voted against it.

In order to oppose Ukraine’s proposal, the United States also proposed a short version of the resolution. However, as the three amendments proposed by European countries to the resolution were passed, the U.S. representative also had to abstain from voting on the resolution he proposed.

According to CCTV reports, the U.S. proposal used terms such as “Russia-Ukraine conflict”. After the amendment was passed, the formulation was revised to read “The Russian Federation fully invaded Ukraine.”

As we all know, resolutions of the United Nations General Assembly are not enforceable and are mainly used to reflect the direction of international public opinion. However, it is indeed rare for the United States to suddenly change its stance on major regional issues.

Before the vote, the U.S. Chargé d’affaires a.i. to the United Nations, Dorothy Camille Shea, publicly shouted that the United Nations General Assembly had passed many resolutions condemning Russia and requiring it to withdraw its troops in Ukraine, but it had never changed the process of a war that has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties.

Xie Ya said: “Starting 11 years ago, the United Nations has condemned Russia many times, but those resolutions failed to stop the war.This war has now dragged on for too long, and has brought terrible costs to people in Ukraine, Russia and elsewhere.”

Xie Ya also said thatThe amendments proposed by European countries “pursue a war of words, not an end to the war.” Adding such language distracts the resolution’s goal to achieve-bringing all members together in support of a resolution that calls for an end to the conflict.

According to US media reports, the Trump administration tried to pressure Ukraine and Europe last week to withdraw the resolution. After this effort failed, the United States informed the EU last Friday afternoon that it would propose a separate competing resolution. According to European diplomats, they are angry that long-time allies have abandoned negotiations and stepped on the opposite side.

Regarding the transformation of the United States, Vasily Nebianja, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations, said in his speech at the conference: “Today, our American colleagues have seen with their own eyes that the road to peace in Ukraine will not be an easy one, and that many will try to delay the war as long as possible, but that should not stop us.

Regarding the dramatic reversal of the United States, Richard Gowan, director of the International Crisis Group to the United Nations, explained to the media that since the Iraq War, the United States and Europe have never had such a major disagreement at the United Nations. Considering that Europe is also a relevant party to the issue, the current differences are even more serious.

Gwin said that the United States was very aggressive in proposing its own text at the last minute, which caught the Europeans off guard.

It is reported that the United States is also preparing to propose the same resolution in the United Nations Security Council next, and it is expected that European countries will propose the same amendment. A State Department official said the United States was prepared to veto any proposed amendment.
