The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) manages assets confiscated by law enforcement agencies during criminal investigations, including real estate, cash, jewelry, antiques, vehicles and cryptocurrencies. However, the agency currently seems unable to accurately estimate the amount of cryptocurrencies it holds. According to people familiar with the matter, USMS has problems managing digital assets such as Bitcoin. Although David Sacks, White House cryptocurrency chief, recently mentioned that the U.S. government is considering establishing a national cryptocurrency reserve, the USMS still fails to effectively track its assets, especially in managing Fork assets such as Bitcoin cash. In addition, USMS has been criticized in the past few years for its insecure cryptocurrency storage methods, and even lost control of two Ethereum wallets at one point. Although USMS is seeking private company assistance in resolving these issues, its procurement process is slow and contract awards have been controversial. (CoinDesk)
